Lovers of the Red Sky
That being said, it was an enjoyable paranormal periodic romance.
This story concerns the intertwined fates of two children born on a very special night.
Set during the Joseon era, this drama centers around the court trying to trap the evil spirit Ma Wang in a painting. Things don't go quite as planned, and the effects spread over everyone. One child born that night is Hong Chun-Ki, the daughter of the divine painter, who is cursed by Ma Wang to be blind. The other child, Ha Ram, is also special, born with a water affinity.
When the two children are 9, they meet again. This time, Chun-Ki's father has become a victim to the madness that befalls a divine painter. Ha Ram has been chosen (unbeknownst to anyone but the shaman) to be a sacrifice to appease the gods and end the drought. During the ceremony, Ma Wang strikes and is separated from his eyes - the source of his power. Ma Wang is nestled within Ha Ram, and the eyes are given to Chun-Ki.
Decades later, Chun-Ki (Kim Yoo-Jung) is now a gifted painting using her talent to sell forgeries, while Ha Ram (Ahn Hyo-Seop) is a blind astrologer and scholar for the King. He has a secret, though. He blames the king for his father's murder and has vowed to get revenge.
What follows his a plot too complicated to get into here, but basically:
There is a second prince (Kwak Si-Yang) who is evil and wants to rule, and there is a third prince (Gong Myung) who is kind and loves the arts. The crown prince is constantly ill and not likely to last long, and the king is fading as well. The king's last mission is to see Ma Wang destroyed and trapped forever in a new painting (the old one was burned during the rain ceremony... it's a whole thing).
Obviously (Why??) Chun-Ki gets herself into a sort of love triangle between Ha Ram and his good friend, the youngest prince. It's clear from the outset that Chun-Ki only has eyes (omg I swear that wasn't meant as a pun) for Ha Ram, and eventually the prince makes peace with this sad (for him) situation. Shenanigans ensue, including, oh yeah HA RAM BECOMING POSSESSED BY THE EVIL SPIRIT WHENEVER CHUN-KI TOUCHES HIM. Bananas.
After lots of crying and fighting and painting, we get our happy ending.
The drama was cute, and I truly adore the leads. I mean, Kim Yoo-Jung is a prolific actress who has been in several dramas since she was young. Ahn Hyo-Seop is always a treat (and so is his face). Gong Myung has a smile that can light up a room and Kwak Si-Yang really did make a detestable villain.
The supernatural elements were interesting, although the special effects were a little hokey, if I'm being honest. I felt like I just wanted it to be a little more.
The paintings (god there were SO MANY paintings) were gorgeous and Ha Ram was incredibly sweet, so it was an enjoyable watch overall. Would I chase someone down demanding they give this a try? Probably not. If they are into paranormal/historical romances? Maybe.
